OBJECTIVE: This in vitro study aimed to compare the diagnostic outcomes of caries detection in premolar and molar teeth on digital periapical radiographs viewed as grayscale images and in the Java-based software (JBS) pseudocolor spectrum. METHOD AND MATERIALS: The study comprised 92 premolar or molar human teeth (n = 46 with caries and n = 46 without clinical caries). For each tooth, digital periapical radiographic images (DPRIs), JBS pseudocolor images, and stereomicroscope images were collected, and caries presence and depth were recorded. In JBS pseudocolor images, regions of interest (ROIs) were detected, and ROI values for caries area (ROI1), non-caries area (ROI2), mesial area (ROI3), and distal area (ROI4) were obtained. The degree of inter-observer agreement was determined using the kappa coefficient, and the sensitivity and specificity of the methods were assessed using ROC analysis. RESULTS: While neither method was consistent with stereomicroscopy in determining caries depth (P < .005), for both observers the kappa value of JBS pseudocolor images were slightly higher than those for DPRIs. ROI1 was found to be significantly lower than ROI2 (P < .001), whereas no difference was found between ROI3 and ROI4 (P = .877). For both observers, the sensitivity and specificity obtained from JBS pseudocolor were above 89%. CONCLUSION: JBS pseudocolor images can be used for caries detection and offer high sensitivity and specificity.

Background: Beta-thalassemia major is an inherited disorder that can cause bone deformity and loss of bone mineral density. The objective of this study is to evaluate the cortical and trabecular mandibular bone morphology of children and adolescents who have beta-thalassemia major (ß-TM) using a fractal dimension (FD) analysis and different panoramic radiomorphometric indices with digital panoramic radiographic images (DPRIs).Material and Methods: The study included 80 patients (with 40 patients each of ß-TM and control). The mandibular cortical width (MCW), panoramic mandibular index (PMI), mandibular cortical index (MCI), and simple visual estimation (SVE) were evaluated, and an FD analysis of five regions of interest (ROIs) (ROI 1: in basal cortical bone; ROI 2: in premolar region; ROI 3: in molar region; ROI 4: in angulus mandible and ROI 5: in condyle region) was obtained in all DPRIs. Quantitative variables were analyzed using the student’s t-test , Kruskal–Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests.Results: When the ß-TM groups were compared with controls, there were no statistically significant differences found in the mean FD values, the ROIs of the trabecular bone, or the SVE. There was a significant correlation in the mean MCW, PMI, ROI of cortical bone (ROI 1), and MCI between ß-TM and control groups (p < 0.001, p < 0.001, p = 0.047, and p = 0.046, respectively). The mean MCW values correlated with the SVE in both the ß-TM and control groups (p = 0.031 and p < 0.001, respectively). While the mean MCW values correlated with the MCI (p = 0.04) in the control group, the mean MCW values were not correlated with the MCI (p = 0.493) in ß-TM group.Conclusions: The current study revealed lower MCW and PMI values in the ß-TM group. While the mean FD values of trabecular bone is similar to the control groups, the mean FD value is lower in cortical bone in the ß-TM group. MCW, PMI, FD of cortical bone and MCI may be key indicators in individuals with beta-thalassemia major.(AU)

BACKGROUND: The follow-up of the peri-implant marginal bone loss is the most important criterion for the determination of implant success. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to measure marginal bone loss using panoramic radiographic images (PRI) of patients treated using a mandibular, two implant-supported, locator-retained denture and to evaluate the compatibility of these findings with those of the finite element analysis (FEA). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The PRI of patients who had a mandibular, two implant-supported, locator-retained denture were assessed, and the mesial and distal marginal bone loss of both right- and left-sided implants was measured. Mandibular and maxillary models, which have the features of bilateral balanced occlusion, were created. The surfaces of the generated models were converted in a computer-aided design model that could be transferred to the FEA software, and the forces were defined on contacts formed in maximum intercuspation, lateral, and protrusive movement position for bilateral balanced occlusion. RESULTS: The bone loss in the mesial and distal regions at the right- and left-sided implants was not statistically significant. Higher stresses were formed on the vestibular side under protrusive movement, on the lingual side under maximum intercuspation, on the distolingual side under left unilateral biting, and on the mesiolingual side under right unilateral biting in the FEA. CONCLUSION: According to FEA, peri-implant bone resorption may be higher in the buccal and palatal regions, implying that panoramic radiographs can be misleading in understanding the amount of peri-implant bone resorption.

OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study were to determine the prevalence of maxillary sinus retention cysts (MSRCs) and to evaluate the effects of mean temperature and mean air humidity on the prevalence of MSRCs in two cities in Turkey. METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted in Antalya and Erzurum, two cities with different air humidities and temperatures in Turkey. Panoramic images of patients who visited the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Faculty of Dentistry, Akdeniz University and Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Faculty of Dentistry, Ataturk University for diagnostic purposes were evaluated. A total of 4800 panoramic images were included in the study. The mean age of the patients was 27.03 ± 6.48 years. The prevalence of MSRCs was analyzed according to sex, mean temperature, and mean air humidity. Values of p < 0.05 were considered statistically significant. RESULTS: Among the 4800 panoramic images evaluated, 228 indicated the presence of MSRCs. MSRCs were found significantly more frequently in males than in females. The prevalence was 3% in Antalya and 6.5% in Erzurum, with a total prevalence of 4.8%. While there was a significant correlation between the total amount of cysts and monthly mean air humidity in Erzurum, the correlation effect size was very low. CONCLUSIONS: The total prevalence of MSRCs was 4.8%. There were no correlations between the frequency of MSRCs and the mean air humidity or mean temperature.
